My Library World

Hello,

My name is Rose Novil and I am a Professor of Library Services. I mostly work at the Skokie Campus. I have been working at Oakton for about seven years.

My first library job was as a catologer at the Newberry Library on the near north side of Chicago.

If you love books, the Newberry is fantasyland. There you can peek into history and read books that first came off the Gutenberg press from the 1500's. A wonderful thing happened to me while I was there...I found this adorable, cuddly black kitten in the parking lot and Eros (that was his name) lived with me for 18 years. The Newberry is open to the public. Go there some time.

My next job was at Columbia College Library where I got to dabble in the arts. From there I went to Chicago Public Library and worked at the main library downtown. I worked in the Education Dept., the Information Center where we answered hundreds of quick reference inquiries and interlibrary loan.

My next stop was National-Louis University where I stayed almost 20 years.

What I have learned from working at all these types of libraries is how much I love them!

Rose, you have an interesting background! I volunteered in the Center for the History of Cartography at the Newberry a number of years ago. Great place!

Have you ever read Time Traveler's Wife? The main character, Henry, works at the Newberry. It's a fun book.

It was really interesting to hear about the libraries in which you have worked. It sounds like fun. I agree that the Newberry would be a fantasy.
